May I ask why people liked Nick and Jade so much? I'm not critising, just trying to understand as I watched that era and was only a few years younger than them at the time, but I can't really recall anything that special about them.

You ask a very good question and I wish had a more deeper answer then I loved them.

Ok if I think harder about it there's a few contributing factors

Nick was already one my favourite characters, pretty sure I hadn't been watching too long when he arrived I remember the storyline with his mum and Irene that was one of his first storyline right?

And I remember Kirsty being down right awful a lot of the time, someone could probably help me out bit more with time line of things but wasn't she with Nick then Seb arrived and she was boarder line cheating on Nick with Seb when Nick and Jade got together? (Did they cross the line when Kirsty was still with him?) And she had big hissy over it even tho she wanted Seb

Then was the Kane stuff in there then remember Kirsty just becoming awful to Seb and dropping out of school then going off my memory she got back with Seb then cheated on him with Kane? So just in contrast Jade and Nick were so much enjoyable compared to Kirsty and her pairings.

But they also gave Jade and Nick challenges to like the bus crash/Nick not walking, the whole Angie saga and again memory foggy but for the most part they stuck together? Just gave you something to get behind and invest in and remember them as some of my first ever favourite couples

Then their brake up was just so stupid and unfair after all of that and insult to injury she gets with Seb after.

I was also young and was easier follow the hype and the feelings of what the show wanted you to. If I watching now age am now might not of been as invested

For me. They were my first couple I fell in love with on the show and they will forever be my fav ever couple on this show. And I don’t see that changing. Particularly since the newer couples in recent years could not hold a candle to the old ones. To me they had a connection from the start and I was just waiting for them to get together and once they did they had a pretty good almost drama free relationship somehow which is not something the writers could do these days. They were special to me and I will never forgive the writers for them not ending up together because they so should have.

It's a tricky one because in many ways these things are almost undefinable. Sometimes a couple click, sometimes they don't. (The experts call it chemistry.) It was based on a long-standing close friendship: Even when they were still with other people, they seemed to be each other's go-to person. They seemed to be better people together. They were together about two years and were very solid during that time. They felt like a couple that you could imagine staying together forever. I guess sometimes a couple captures the audience's attention and for some of us, they were one of them.

Thanks everyone for sharing those insights. I remember the initial pairings were Duncan/Jade and Nick/Kirsty, but both seemed quite uneventful pairings from memory (perhaps due to being slightly younger?).

I recall much of the drama for Nick and Jade - did Jade cheat on Nick with Seb after Charlotte's death? I recall her going "off the rails" after Charlotte's death, despite barely knowing her. It might have been around the same time as the Angie stuff. From memory, I think I preferred Jade with Seb, despite them being a relatively uneventful pairing in comparison.

I also wasn't really a fan of either Jade or Nick, so perhaps that's why I don't see the magic in them as a couple. I can see for those who liked them as a couple, why it was frustrating they didn't get their "sunset ending". Jade left not long after Nick, so she could have followed him to the US instead of that awful twin swap stuff.

2004 was a big year for poor exits - Max was shipped off to boarding school in a blink-and-miss-it exit instead of moving away with Rhys and Shelley, Jade and Seb's has been discussed above, Rhys' exit was messy in the sense that the writers had spent ages building up the Hunter/Sutherlands as the new central family unit, only to tear it all apart after a few months.

Jade and Seb were never a thing till they were a thing. But yes I remember Jade going off the rails too I remember she kinda got bit sexual.

I remember her wanting to sleep with Nick who eventually said no in the end because thought she wasn't doing it for right reasons.

I remember was some school performance thing that she did something inappropriate in front of everyone (can't for life on me remember what) then  didn't she take pictures of herself for Nick and that became whole thing?

I remember someone thinking Nick was being taken advantage of and fingers started getting pointed at Irene when it was of course Angie.

This might be what I am getting confused Jade cheating with Seb with! There was a school performance and she got really sexually inapporpaite with Seb during the performance. I don't remember any further details though.

Little surprised no one said Kyle yet.

I had only just started watching not long before he left so wasn't invested in the character but the exit was lame

Maybe many have blocked it from their minds lol.

I think it was one of the worst exits in the whole show from any character. I'd argue it's probably the worst for a regular.

I actually liked his exit though it was for personal reasons as I was about to move town myself and couldn't wait.

As I recall his lease at the Surf Club was due to expire and he was told there was no point in him hanging around for any longer. I remember him driving out of town looking relieved to be getting out of there and I thought to myself that will be me in a few weeks time.

Unfortunately his replacement character was Tony Holden who was on it for a long time and is possible the most boring character there's ever been on the show.

Coincidently, I stopped watching the show for many years around the time the Holdens arrived

I didn't find any of the Holdens particuarly interesting from the little I saw of them to be honest.
