Red Ranger 1 Posted September 3, 2022 Report Posted September 3, 2022 So...a couple of years ago, I wrote a 90s-set fiction called Silver Couple and made some vague promises as to a sequel. It's been a while but this is that sequel.I've been writing it in fits and starts but hopefully the result will be coherent! Story Title: Silver AgeType of story: Short/Medium ficMain Characters: Shane, Shannon, Selina, Paul, Frankie and othersBTTB rating: TGenre: Drama/FamilyDoes story include spoilers: NoAny warnings: Mild violence and sexual contentSummary: A year on from the events of the first story, Shane and Shannon are navigating their lives together and run into a number of difficulties. Sequel to Silver Couple. CHAPTER ONE A year.Shane had a hard time believing it had been a year.In fact, it had been a lot more than that.It was getting closer to two since he and Shannon had first started that awkward, impossible to define relationship, which had led to her getting pregnant with their daughter and moving in with him and the other children, and ultimately to this.  He had been married to Shannon for a year.In the not-too-distant future, heâd reach the point where heâd have been married to her longer than he was to Angel. That felt strange. It wasnât that he saw Shannon as second choice exactly. It was just that for so long it seemed like he and Angel were going to spend the rest of their lives together. And now she was gone and he was going to spend his life with Shannon?  He was fine with that.  The house was full of well-wishers, come to celebrate their anniversary. He bumped into Alf and Ailsa in the entrance, chatting with Donald.âCongratulations there, young fella,âAlf noted, raising a beer in his direction.  Shane nodded politely, something he was just about getting used to doing.Looking around, he quickly found Travis and Rebecca. He thought that romancing Donald Fisherâs daughter was extremely brave of Travis, but they seemed to be doing okay so far.  âHow are you doing with the hosting thing?âTravis asked.  Shane grimaced slightly.âCanât wait for it to be over to be honest.â  âAww, people are just pleased for you,âRebecca chided him.  âYeah, I know.Iâd have just been happy with a quiet night in.âShane looked around for his wife and picked her out, chatting to her best friend Selina, along with Irene and Marilyn. He waved over at her and she waved back.  Her foster parents, Michael and Pippa, were there as well, along with their latest household:Liam, Tiegan and Sam.The former two were chatting with Ireneâs house guest, Joey. And of course, Dylan and Angel had been allowed to stay up, with even their sister Katie just about managing to stand in a corner without falling over.  Shannon seemed to sense Shaneâs intentions and came over to him.Shane put an arm round here and cleared his throat.âI guess Iâm expecting to make a speech.â  âTalking was never something you had much trouble with as I recall,âDonald commented.  âThanks, Don.âShane felt Shannon give him a reassuring squeeze, which cheered him up a bit.âThe missus here and I just want to thank you all for comingâŚâShannon gave him a playful slap at the reference, grinning all the time.âNo, really, weâve had some tough times over the last few years and youâve all been a big supportâŚyeah, even you, SamâŚso, thanks, from both of us.âHe gestured to the children.âFrom all of us!â  Michael raised a glass cautiously.âTo the first year of many?â  âCheers!âthe others echoed.Shane kissed Shannon gratefully. *** Later that night, with the house emptied of people, Shane was lying in bed.Shannon came back into the room and crawled in next to him.âKids settled?âhe asked her.  âYep,âShannon confirmed,âNext time Dylanâs in âOne more storyâ mode, you can deal with it.âShe thought for a moment.âShane, can I ask you something?â  âI guess soâŚâ  âCan we have another baby?â  Shane was slightly bemused.âWhat, three kids isnât enough for you?â  Shannon looked as though she was considering her next words very carefully.âYou know I love Dylan and Angel, right?âShane nodded.âBut theyâre not mine. And when I got pregnant with Katie, we werenât even together and I was so worried that I didnât get a chance to enjoy it.Iâd just like, one day, to be able to enjoy having a child with you.â  Shane nodded slowly.âYeah.Yeah, I think Iâd like that too.â  Shannon kissed him passionately.  âYou didnât mean tonight, did you?âhe checked.  âNo, but thereâs no harm in getting some practice in,âShannon answered as he rolled over on top of her.
Red Ranger 1 Posted September 10, 2022 Author Report Posted September 10, 2022 Thank you again for the comment, pembie, and I hope everyone likes this one! CHAPTER TWO The car had drawn to a halt but no-one was getting out.Shannon watched Shane, sensing his discomfort with what theyâre doing.âIf youâre not okay with thisâŚâ  Shane tried to look relaxed.âItâs okay.I mean, weâve been doing this for a year now.â  âWell, yeah, but not for this long.â  Shane didnât say anything further.Instead, he got out of the car.âOkay, kids, come on.â  Dylan jumped down straightaway, with Angel just a step behind.Shannon lifted Katie out of the back, carrying her as they followed Shane to the block of flats.  Shane found the right flat and knocked on the door. The man who answered it gave Shane a brief nod of acknowledgement before looking down at Dylan with a big smile on his face.âHey there, buddy!â  âHi, Dad,âDylan answered simply.  Frankie appeared beside Paul.Shane had never been entirely comfortable with the fact that his late wifeâs sister was now the girlfriend of his stepsonâs father.Shannon kind of wished it wasnât the case too, but both of them had to acknowledge that the couple loved each other and had always been good with the children.Given Paul had once tried to kidnap Dylan, it had taken several months for them to be trusted alone with them. This would be a big test.  âHi, Shane, Shannon, come in,âFrankie invited. The family trooped inside.  âWeâve got two whole weeks together, mate,âPaul was telling Dylan,âIsnât that great?â  Frankie settled Angel into a corner, then turned to Shannon, who was still holding Katie.âDo you want me to take her?â  Shannon was cautious.âAre you sure youâre okay with looking after her as well?I can still ask Michael and PippaâŚâ  Frankie shook her head.âShe should be with her brother and sister.Itâll be all right.â  Shannon handed her daughter over and in the process her gaze alighted on Frankieâs hand and the ring on her finger.âIs that..?â  Frankie smiled and looked over at Paul, who grinned back.âWeâre engaged,âshe confirmed.  âOh, congratulations,âShannon said, genuinely meaning it.  âYeah, good on you,âShane agreed, sounding slightly less enthusiastic,âHave you set a date?â  âWe were thinking November,âPaul noted,âAnyway, what are your plans while the kids are here?â  Shane thought for a moment how best to describe it.âWeâve got some old friends to look up.â *** âOver there,âShane noted, pointing.  Shannon indicated and pulled into the drive heâd pointed out.It was a quiet neighbourhood in a country town.Probably just what the people living there had wanted.A familiar young man came out of the house and Shane immediately jumped out of the car to give him a hug and shake his hand.âDamo! How have you been?â  Damian grinned back at him.âAs good as you, I guess.â  Shannon had got out as well and hugged her one-time foster brother.âSo are you here on your own?â  âWell, noâŚâ  His wife Sarah emerged from the house, carrying their baby son.âLook, William, Mummy and Daddyâs old friends have come to visit.â  Shannon quickly bounded over to her.âOh, heâs gorgeous. Can I have a cuddle?â  âOf course, come out the back.â  Shane waited until the two women had disappeared out of earshot before talking to Damian again.âIâve got to say, this isnât the way I expected youâd end up.â  âNo, me neither,âDamian admitted,âI thought Iâd pretty much given up on this sort of life. But then Sarah got pregnant andâŚwell, I guess the Lord works in mysterious ways.Becoming a Catholic priest didnât really seem like an option anymore.â  âHow are you going with the Methodists?â  âItâs an adjustment but turns out I can serve God and have a family.Whoâd have thought, eh?â  âNot me.I thought Sarah would always see you as her daggy surrogate brother.â  âYeah, well, I didnât see you and Shannon ending up together.Guess weâve both been surprised.â *** Shane was sitting alone on the front porch when Sarah came back out.âYou donât want to come round and join us?â  Shane sighed.âSorry, Iâm kind of ruining the reunion vibe here, arenât I?Itâs justâŚthis is so familiar, except itâs not.â  âI know what you mean,âSarah admitted,âThe three of us back together, I keep expecting to see Angel come round the corner.Sheâd be glad to see you happy though?I mean, she liked ShannonâŚâ  Shane gave a brief laugh.âYeah, things went a bit wrong between them for a bit, after you left town, but yeah, at the beginning and the end, she liked her.â  âWell, thatâs good enough for me.And for her.â  âSo what about you?Married to Damo, did you ever see that happening?â  Sarah laughed self-consciously.âI didnât a few years ago, no.But once we took that step, it felt kind of right.I wasnât expecting us to last but here we are.â  âHow did your dad take it?From what I remember of him, I canât see him being that thrilled at you getting pregnant.â  Sarah grimaced.âTo put it mildly. But he couldnât really argue with me marrying someone that was training to be a minister.â  Shane nodded.âWell, I guess things have worked out for all of us.â *** Round the back, Shannon was watching Damian with William.âIâm still getting used to seeing you as a parent.â  âWell, I wasnât expecting you to be one this quick either,âDamian fired back.  âFair point.âShannon hesitated for a moment.âIt could have been sooner for you.Do you ever think about..?â  âAbout Maddie?âDamian completed for her,âYeah, sometimes.I wasnât ready to be a father then, but things could have turned out very different if sheâd been born.â  âI know Selina thinks about her too.â  âHow is she?â  Shannon sighed.âI donât want to guilt trip you or anything.Youâve got your life together and thatâs great. And itâs not like Selinaâs a completely hopeless case, sheâs doing well with her nurseâs training and everything.Itâs just, I dunno, I feel like sheâs lonely sometimes.Ever since you, or maybe even before that, itâs like sheâs been lurching from one relationship disaster to another.â  Damian nodded.âI do want whatâs best for her, you know that?â  âYeah.Hopefully sheâll get it soon.â Â
Red Ranger 1 Posted September 16, 2022 Author Report Posted September 16, 2022 CHAPTER THREE Shane and Shannon had parked the car at the top of the beach and walked down.âThey said theyâd be somewhere around here,âShannon noted.  Shane gestured ahead.âI think thatâs them?â  Further down the beach they could see a couple dressed in wetsuits.A sandy-haired young man was playfully chasing a brown-haired young woman. He caught her and she gave a squeal of delight as he turned her and passionately kissed herâŚwhich didnât look like it was going to end any time soon.  âSally!Curtis!âShannon called out.  The pair quickly disentangled, somewhat red-faced, as Shannon and Shane approached.âHi there,âSally noted awkwardly,âWe werenât expecting you this early.â  âI hope not,âShannon answered, giving both of them a quick hug and then grimacing,âUrgh, youâre both a bit sandy.â  âYou getting soft in your old age?âCurtis asked jokingly.  âSheâs just the way I like her,âShane replied as he shook hands with Curtis and gave Sally a hug.  âSounds like youâve both gone soft,âCurtis retorted.  âSo, what are the plans?âShannon asked.  Sally took her by the arm.âCome on, Iâll show you.â *** The two girls went to a beach hut not too far away, where Shannon sat on the bed in what comprised the living area while Sally got changed in the bathroom.âNot quite where I imagined youâd end up living!âshe called.  Sally joined her, having got dressed in a t-shirt and shorts. She grabbed a blouse from a chair and pulled it on.âWell, itâs kind of temporary.Curtis has got a competition up the coast in a few weeks.â  Shannon shook her head in bemusement.âI never thought when we first met that youâd end up as a surf chick. As Curtisâ groupie!â  âIâm actually quite enjoying it,âSally admitted,âI guess spending all those years in a seaside town, itâs rubbed off on me a bit.â  âYeah, but Iâd felt sure youâd end up going onto uni.â  âI might have done,âSally accepted,âBut Curtis was never going to want to go.â  Shannon nodded, taking the point.âIâm amazed you got him through his HSC.â  âIt was tough but heâs pretty good at things when he puts his mind to them. But once school was finished, he just wanted to get out there.Anyway, itâs not like Iâve finished studying completely, Iâm still taking the correspondence course. It might take me a bit longer but Iâll get there in the end.â  Shannon looked wistful.âI should probably do the same.Iâve kind of accepted uniâs not going to happen. Being a full-time mum takes up too much time.â  Sally gave a small laugh.âWhoâd have thought that Shannon Reed, the ultimate rebel, would end up so domesticated?â  âAbout as many people that thought Sally Fletcher, the ultimate model student, would end up soâŚbohemian,âShannon retorted with a grin,âAnyway, Iâve been trying to get back into writing recently.â  Sally nodded approvingly.âI guess we all just have to follow our dreams.â *** Curtis and Shane were still on the beach outside.Curtis had also got changed into a shirt, t-shirt and shorts. Shane looked out into the sea.âYou know, there was a time when I thought I might end up doing something like this.â  Curtis nodded.âYeah, from what I hear, no-one was really predicting youâd end up as a family man when you first came to the Bay.Did you really drive someoneâs car into a lake?â  âOi, you had your moments as well,âShane protested.  âI guess we both had some growing up to do.â  âMmm, I think you ending up with Sal was probably even more unexpected than me with Shannon.â  âShe kind of grounds me.â  âThe best ones do.â  âIs that what Shannon is?â  âYou getting the overprotective big brother on me?âShane asked,âSheâs the person I want to spend the rest of my life with, that good enough?â  âItâll suit me.â  Sally and Shannon came back over to join them.âSal says thereâs a cafĂŠ in town where we can have lunch,âShannon explained,âYou guys want to come?â  Shane put his arm around her, while Curtis did the same with Sally.âSounds good to me.â
Red Ranger 1 Posted September 18, 2022 Author Report Posted September 18, 2022 Thanks for the comment, pembie! CHAPTER FOUR âAnd then we went to the water park,âDylan revealed, the latest in a string of similar declarations since Shane and Shannon had collected him and his sisters and brought them home. Â âWow, sounds like your dad and Auntie Frankie really spoiled you,âShane remarked with just a trace of bitterness. Â âBut I missed you and Shannon,âDylan added awkwardly. Â Shane instantly felt bad.He might not like Paul but he had to admit the man was doing his best to be a good father to Dylan, while still respecting the fact that Shane and Shannon were his family.âWe missed you too, mate,âhe confirmed, crouching down by him,âBut did you have a good time?âDylan looked at him uncertainly which only made him feel worse.âItâs okay if you did.We had a good time while we were away as well.â Â âYes,âDylan said cautiously. Â Shane ruffled his hair.âGood boy.â Â Shannon appeared from the direction of the bedroom.âWell, thatâs Angel and Katie down for their naps. Everyone having fun here?â Â Dylan looked at Shane as if unsure how to respond.âI think so.â Â âCourse we are,âShane confirmed,âI canât promise you a trip to the water park but how about a game of cricket?â Â âRace you!âDylan declared, rushing outside. Â âDonât forget that Michael and Pippa wanted us to come over,âShannon reminded Shane. Â âRight, yeah. Are we taking the kids?â Â âNo, Iâll get Selina to come and babysit.â Â Shane gave her a quick kiss.âIâll only be ten minutes.Maybe fifteen.â *** Shane and Shannon sat at the table in the caravan park house as Pippa brought some cups of tea over. âSure I canât get you anything stronger?âMichael asked. Â âThisâll do fine,âShane confirmed. Â âWhat did you want to see us about?âShannon asked. Â Pippa pulled a mock-hurt face.âOh, what, I canât just have my foster daughter over once in a while?âShe paused.âBut, actually, there was something.â Â âDid you enjoy your trip?âMichael asked. Â âYeah, it was nice to see Damian again,âShane confirmed. Â âAnd Sally and Curtis,âShannon added. Â âRight.âMichael let the comment hang in the air for a moment before continuing,âBecause we were thinking of doing the same.â Â âWe havenât really had a trip away together since our honeymoon,âPippa noted,âBut as long as itâs okay with you.â Â âIt sounds great to me,âShannon commented,âWhy would you need our permission?â Â âWell, weâd be taking Christopher with us,âPippa explained,âBut we donât want to take Liam, Tiegan and Sam out of school.â Â âAre you asking us to keep an eye on them?âShannon asked. Â âWe were actually hoping youâd move in here,âMichael told her,âAnd Dylan, Angel and Katie, of course.â Â âI know itâs a lot to ask,âPippa began. Â âSounds all right to me,âShane replied. He looked over at Shannon.âWhat about you?â Â âYeah, fine. After looking after three children, three teenagers will be no problem.â Â Michael gave her a rueful look.âIâll remind you that you said that when we get back.â
Red Ranger 1 Posted September 25, 2022 Author Report Posted September 25, 2022 CHAPTER FIVE Selina looked around the living room of the caravan park house.âI still canât believe this is yours.Thatâs even more grown-up than being married.â  âItâs not exactly mine,âShannon pointed out,âWeâre just looking after it for Pippa and Michael.â  âYeah, I know, but you can pretend.âSelina wandered over to the mantlepiece.âYou seem to have inherited the family photos as well.â  Shannon suddenly looked awkward.âUm, yes,âshe confirmed, attempting to position herself between Selina and the photos.  Selinaâs gaze drifted over them.âHey, is this one new?âThen she noticed what Shannon had been hoping to keep from her.âOh, right, yeah.Steven, Viv and the twins.â  Shannon grimaced. She was aware how painful it was to see someone youâd once been in love with move on while you were left alone.âSorry.â  âNah, Iâm pleased for them.âSelina almost sounded like she meant it.âItâs just, you knowâŚwhat was it that meant heâd settle down with her and not me?â  âYou know it wasnât ideal,âShannon pointed out,âHe was your teacher.â  âWell, what about Curtis? You saw him and Sal while you were away, right?â  Shannon sighed, not liking the direction the conversation was going.âYes.They seem happy.â  Selina nodded.âIâm pleased for them, you know, theyâre my mates and everything.Itâs justâŚI broke up with Curtis âcos I thought there was something more out there for me and turns out thereâs less.â  âYouâve got your career sorted,âShannon attempted,âThatâs got to count for something, right?â  âYeah, youâre right.âSelina didnât sound too convinced.âIâd better let you get on.â *** Shane pulled up outside the house and Liam, Tiegan and Sam all piled out of the vehicle:Heâd just picked them up from Summer Bay High.âCan we head down the Diner?âSam asked.  Shane tried to think what Michael would say.âDo you have any homework?â  âA bitâŚâ  âThen get inside until it gets done.âShane was gratified to see Sam scrambling off, then turned his attention to the two older teens, who were looking somewhat downcast.âIn.â  Shane followed the trio inside and, as they headed upstairs, he noticed Shannon sitting on the sofa, her attention fixated on a piece of paper. He kissed her on the top of the head and sat down next to her.âI think Iâm getting the hand of this parenting thing.âShannon gave him a brief smile but seemed distracted. âWhatâs that?â  âItâs from Mandy,âShannon explained,âYou know, that author that was giving me all that encouragement a while back.â  âThe one you had a crush on?âShane asked.Shannon looked startled.âHey, Alex and I talked, you know.â  âRemind me to have a word with him some time.Yes, the one I had a bit of a crush on.Sheâs in the area soon and she was hoping to stay here.â  âIâll get a van ready for her.â  Shannon seemed a bit put-out.âIs that all youâve got to say?â  âWellâŚdo you still fancy her?â  Shannon relaxed into a reluctant smile and cuddled up to him.âNo, youâre the only person Iâve got eyes for these days.â  âRight. Then Iâm looking forward to meeting her.â
Red Ranger 1 Posted September 28, 2022 Author Report Posted September 28, 2022 Thanks for the comment, pembie! CHAPTER SIX Shannon came hurrying into the house.âQuick, sheâs here!â  The rest of the household slowly got to their feet.âDo we have to line up and curtsy to her?âTiegan wondered.  âIâm not curtsying to anyone!âSam protested.  Tiegan gave him a mocking look.âAwww, but youâd look so cute doing it.â  âWill you stop it?âShannon snapped.  Before any of the teens could respond, a blonde-haired woman came through the door, prompting a cry of delight from Shannon.âMandy!â  Mandy gave her old friend a tight hug.âGood to see you again. And wow, whoâs the welcoming committee?â  Shannon gestured to the group.âI think you know Sam.This is Liam and Tiegan.â  âPleased to meet you, Miss Thomas,âLiam greeted her.  Mandy laughed.âThat makes me sound like a friend of your mum!Mandy will do fine.â  Shannon continued with the introductions.âThese are my stepchildren, Dylan and Angel, and thatâs my daughter Katie.â  âYes, I think I remember you,âMandy commented to Dylan before turning her attention to the last person present,âHello, Shane.â  âHey there.âShane gave her an awkward hug.âGood to get a chance to know you properly.â  âYes, our paths havenât really crossed that much.I seem to remember you were at Disneyland for most of my first visit here.â  âWe saw Mickey Mouse,âDylan recalled.  Shane nodded in confirmation.âI wasnât sure youâd remember,âhe remarked to Mandy.  âOh, writers always remember things,âMandy replied,âThey make for a good story.â  Shannon grabbed Mandyâs hand.âCome on, Iâll show you to your van!â  As they went out, Liam and Sam sidled over to Shane.âIâm not sure youâre going to see much of Shannon during this visit,âLiam noted.  âYeah, I think sheâs found someone else to talk to,âSam agreed.  Shane glared at them.âWell done on volunteering to do the dishes.â *** Shannon and Mandy walked through the caravan park.âWould I be out of line if I said I didnât imagine you ending up with Shane?âMandy asked,âHe just seems a bitâŚstraightforward.â  âHe is a bit,âShannon admitted,âHis first wife, Angel, she was a bit like me.The artistic type.I guess someone straightforward appeals to us.I just really really love him.I feel happy and safe with him.âShe noticed Mandy smiling.âWhat?â  âI just donât think Iâve ever seen you like this before.Happy.Itâs nice.â  âYou mean Iâm usually all angsty and brooding?â  âI didnât want to say it.â  Nearby, Selina and Joey were approaching them.Selina gestured ahead.âHey, thatâs Mandy, Shannonâs friend.Letâs go and say hello.â  âIâm meant to be meeting Tiegan and Liam,âJoey protested.  Selina rolled her eyes.âFine, run along then.Iâll go and be social on my own.âShe headed over to the other two women.âMandy, hi!â  âHi, Selina,âMandy greeted her,âLooks like weâre going to be the two left on the sidelines now our friendâs got married.â  âGuess so,âSelina agreed, trying to keep smiling.  Shannon glanced over towards the house and noticed something that required her attention.âEr, Selina, can you help Mandy get settled in?Itâs Van 7.â  âYeah, sure,âSelina agreed.  âWhat are you going to be doing?âMandy asked.  âGreeting some less welcome guests.âShannon headed towards the house.  Selina gestured for Mandy to lead the way.âShannon seems happy,âMandy noted,âComfortable with herself.â  âYeah, I think she is,âSelina agreed.  âWhat about you?â  Selina sighed.âIâm getting there.â *** Inside the house, Paul was giving Dylan a big hug.âMissed you, champ.â  âMissed you too, Dad,âDylan answered.  Frankie glanced over at Shane.âThanks for renting us a van.â  âItâs what theyâre for,âShane replied, trying not to sound as blunt as he felt.  Shannon came hurrying in.âPaul, Frankie, hi!Iâm sorry I wasnât here when you arrived, Iâve just been showing another guest to a van.An old friend of mine actually.Do you know how long youâre staying for?â  âWeâre not quite sure,âPaul admitted,âMaybe a week, maybe more.â  âWe just thought it would be a good opportunity to spend time with the kids,âFrankie explained,âRather than them just coming to us for a bit.â  Shannon went over to the key box.âWell, youâre in Van 4.Itâs the second one along on the left.â  Paul held out a hand to Dylan.âYou want to show me?âDylan nodded eagerly.  âStay with your dad and Auntie Frankie until I come and get you!âShane called after him as the trio retreated.  Shannon gave Shane a cuddle.âYou okay with this?â  âKind of have to be, donât I?âShane answered,âI just hope they donât decide to stay too long.â
Red Ranger 1 Posted September 30, 2022 Author Report Posted September 30, 2022 Thanks for the comment, pembie! CHAPTER SEVEN âEveryone, dinnerâs nearly ready!âShannon called up the stairs. She went back through to the living area.  Shane was wiping his hands on a rag, having been doing work out in the caravan park.âYou want me to get cleaned up?â  Shannon looked him up and down.âNah, I donât think anyoneâll notice either way.â  Shane gave her a look of mock offence and chased her towards the sofa with Shannon giggling wildly. Juat then, Sam, Liam and Tiegan came in.âGrown-ups are so embarrassing,âSam complained.  Shannon coughed awkwardly.âUm, sit down all of you.Iâll get the food.âShe headed to retrieve a pot of stew from the kitchen and dolloped a reasonable amount onto everyoneâs plate.  âSo, have you decided if I can ride your bike yet?âLiam asked Shane.  Shannon gave Shane a look.âIs this responsible parenting?â  âOnly around the caravan park,âLiam argued.  âI kind of fancy teaching Dylan to ride one day,âShane mused,âI guess thisâd be good practice.â  âWhat about if Katie or Angel wants to learn to ride as well?âTiegan asked pointedly.  âWellâŚIâd teach them as well.Good food, Shannon!â  âThank you,âShannon answered,âAnd nice change of subject.â  âI thought it was good as well,âSam agreed,âSeconds?â  Shannon shook her head.âThatâs all there is.â  Sam looked disgruntled.âWell, thatâs no good.â  Shannonâs attention was suddenly drawn to her husband.âShane, are you all right?â  Shane had suddenly started sweating profusely. He clawed at his collar.âI donât know, Iâm just really hot all of a suddenâŚcanât breatheâŚâHe pitched out of his chair onto the floor, unconscious.  Shannon checked on him briefly then ran for the phone and hammered 000.âAmbulance.â *** Shannon sat on her own in a corridor.Selina and Mandy came hurrying towards her.Shannon looked at them with relief.âDid you check on the kids?â  Mandy nodded.âPaul and Frankie offered to sit with them.â  âSorry I wasnât on duty here,âSelina said awkwardly,âOf all the nights to have offâŚâ  âItâs fine,âShannon assured her,âThe staff here have been really good.It was just so scary, I wasnât even sure if he was breathingâŚâ  Mandy patted her hand.âDonât think about that now, okay?Heâs in the right place and hopefully theyâll find out whatâs wrong.â  Selinaâs friend Doctor Lachlan Fraser came over.âShannon, can I talk to you for a minute?â  As Shannon walked over to Lachlan, Selina turned to Mandy.âYou were really good with her.Better than me and Iâm meant to be training as a nurse.Youâre a good friend to her.â  âWellâŚI hope Iâm friends with you too.â  Selina hesitated for a moment.âYeah, sure.â  Lachlan was talking to Shannon nearby.âYour husbandâs stable for the moment but early signs are heâs been poisoned.â  âPoisoned?âShannon struggled to get her head around it.âWas it something he ate?I mean, we all had the same thing.â  âNo, the early signs are he absorbed it through his skin.â  Shannon thought for a moment.âHe was wiping his hands on a cloth, I think he had it outside.â  âOkay, well, the police will need it for analysis.Someone must have poured a pretty big amount on it to get this sort of reaction.â  âYou meanâŚsomeone hurt him on purpose?â  âIt looks that way, yes.â  âHeâs not going to die, is he?â  Lachlan seemed to consider his response carefully.âWeâre doing everything we can to make sure that doesnât happen.â

CHAPTER EIGHT Selina was the one doing the driving as the car pulled up near the house.Shannon had sat next to her, mostly in silence, on the journey back from the hospital. They probably should have predicted the police would be at the caravan park. They would have been less likely to predict that theyâd arrive to see someone being dragged to a police car or that it would be Paul.  Shannon picked out someone she recognised among the police and called out to her.âConstable Gardiner?Whatâs going on?â  Terri Gardiner checked that her colleagues had things under control then came over to the two younger women.âWe searched Paulâs caravan and found a bottle of the poison used on Shane.â  Shannon gaped.âPaul did that?â  âWell, he denies it but thatâs where the evidence is pointing at the moment.Hopefully weâll know more after weâve questioned him.âTerri went back over to the others.  Selina took Shannonâs arm.âCome on, letâs get inside.â  When they did, they were immediately accosted by Frankie, who had been looking after the children. âShannon, you have to tell them he didnât do it!â  âWhat makes you so sure?âSelina asked caustically.  âBecause I know him,âFrankie insisted,âI know he was horrible to you when you first met, Shannon, but heâs changed since then, I know it.He wouldnât hurt Shane or you.â  âWellâŚthe police arenât going to let him go just because I tell them I donât think he did it,âShannon attempted.  âBut theyâll listen to you, theyâll lock him up otherwise.â  Shannonâs temper finally snapped.âPaul isnât the one that might die here!âshe shouted,âShaneâs in hospital fighting for his life!Heâs the one you should be worried about!âShe ran upstairs. *** âDo I have to have an apple?âSam complained, as he looked over his packed lunch one morning,âI usually have cake.â  Mandy shot him a sceptical look. âWell, how about I ask Shannon next time I see her and if she says yes, you can have cake next time.â  Sam seemed to consider this for a moment.âNah, itâs all right,âhe decided at last before making a quick exit.  Selina passed him in the door. She had come to the house to check on things before going to work, something sheâd done quite a few times over the last few days.âIs it wrong that Iâm a little bit freaked out about you being all domestic?âshe asked Mandy.  Mandy gave a slight smile.âItâs not very me,âshe admitted,âBut I felt I should help Shannon out.â  âHey, no judgement, Iâm sure she appreciates it.But have you really been looking after this lot on your own?â  âWell, Shannonâs still here sometimes. And Frankieâs been helping out.â  Selina considered the last one.âI thought sheâd still be spewing about everything thatâs going on.â  âSheâs still very worried about Paul, like Shannon is about Shane. But she still really cares about the children. Is there no-one else we can call?â  âShannon said she doesnât want Michael and Pippa knowingâŚâ  âSomeone else then.â  Selina paused, thinking.âLet me see what I can do.â *** Shannon sat by Shaneâs bedside.Sheâd been coming there a lotâŚperhaps more than she should, with three young children and three older ones to look after, but it had felt necessary.âThings are okay at home,âshe told him,âEveryoneâs pitching in, so you donât need to worry about that.âShe hesitated.âYou need to worry about me, though.I miss you, Shane.I love you so much and I donât know what Iâll do if you donât come back. Please come back.â  Selina took that moment to enter.âHow is he?â  Shannon sighed.âThe doctors say theyâve flushed all the toxins out of his system, itâs just a waiting game.He could wake up any minute or not at all.â  âShanâŚnon?âThey turned round at the voice and saw Shane staring weakly at them.  âIâll get Lachie,âSelina offered, dashing out.  âWhatâŚhappened?âShane managed.  Shannon kissed him enthusiastically on the cheek.âYou got poisoned,âshe told him,âThe police have arrested Paul but he says he didnât do it and so does Frankie but that doesnât matter now.âShe smiled delightedly.âYouâre awake!â
Red Ranger 1 Posted October 5, 2022 Author Report Posted October 5, 2022 Thanks for the comments, pembie! CHAPTER NINE Shannon helped Shane into the house.âAre you sure youâre all right?âshe checked, not for the first time.  Shane gave a small laugh.âNo offence, Shannon, but if I wasnât, Iâm not sure that leaning on you would help much.â  âThanks a bunch,âShannon retorted,âBut I do take your point.â  Liam, Tiegan and Sam appeared from the kitchen area.âWe hope youâre all right, Shane,âTiegan offered, âWeâre sorry if we caused trouble for you.â  âIâm sorry if they caused trouble for you as well,âLiam added, getting glares from the others.  Shane managed a smile.âThanks, guys, I donât think any of you lot had anything to do with me getting poisoned but itâs nice that you care.â  Sam looked at the other two.âFancy a game of basketball?âThey dashed out.  âWell, that didnât last long,âShannon mused.  âWhatâs happening with Paul?âShane asked as he lowered himself into a chair.  âStill in custody,âShannon answered.  âAnd Frankie?â  âSheâs still around but I guess sheâs keeping a low profile now youâre back.â  Shane pushed himself to his feet.âShe still in the same van?â *** Frankie opened the door to her caravan at the knock and stepped back in surprise.âShane!âShane walked past her into the van and took a seat, leaving her with very little option but to follow him.âIâm glad youâre all right.â  âAre you?âShane asked.  Frankie hesitated.âIâm not sure what I should say about Paul.â  âI get that youâre worried about him.â  âYeah, but are you?â  Shane sighed.âLook, I donât like him.But I do believe he loves you and I do believe heâs trying his best to be a good father to Dylan.â  âDo you believe he poisoned you?â  Shane shrugged.âI donât know.He did some messed up stuff in the past. But as for you and me, after all that effort Angel went through to get you back in our lives, I donât want that ending now.Okay?Donât think you have to stay away.â *** At the beach house, Mandy hung up the phone before turning to Selina.âI think thatâs everyone.â  âYouâre sure?âSelina checked.  âWell, I called all the numbers you gave me.With any luck, Shannon should be having a lot of help heading her way pretty soon.â  They slumped onto the sofa together.âGood,âSelina declared. She looked over at Mandy.âShannon is really lucky to have you as a friend, you know.â  âWell, sheâs lucky to have you too,âMandy suggested.  âYeah, but Iâm not just saying it.I really mean it.âSelina looked at Mandy for a long moment, as though contemplating whether or not to do something, then leaned in and kissed her.She let it become more intense, felt Mandy start to kiss her backâŚand then pulled back, wincing awkwardly.âSorry.â  âThatâs okay,âMandy said nonchalantly,âItâs not often I get a chance to kiss an attractive younger woman. Not really what youâre into though, is it?â  âNo.I thought maybe it could be butâŚsorry.âSelina sighed.âItâs just watching Shannon with Shane, and seeing guys I used to like happy and settled, I get the feeling my life isnât going the way itâs supposed to.â  âI know how you feel.Being like I am, itâs less likely someone you likeâs going to like you back.â  Selina pondered this.âDo youâŚâlikeâ Shannon?â  Mandy seemed unsure how to answer for a moment.âYes,âshe said at last,âIt might be ego but I think, if circumstances had been different, she could have liked me back.A bit like some of the guys you think about.â  âYeah, maybe,âSelina acknowledged.  âDonât think itâs all about whether or not youâre dating someone, Selina. For me, itâs all about writing. Maybe thereâs something thatâs going to fulfill you as well.â

(And if you are interested in New EU, bearing in mind I haven't read any of them, either Aftermath or the recently-released The Princess and the Scoundrel seem to be good starting points.) Thanks for the comment and here's another chapter! CHAPTER TEN Shane was sitting on the sofa and didnât look too happy about it, especially with Shannon dashing about trying to get things ready for the kidsâ trip to school.âAre you sure I canât help you with anything?âhe asked.  Shannon shook her head.âYouâre still resting.â  âWell, Iâm allowed to stand up occasionally.â  âThanks for the offer but unless you can rustle up a gang of elves to help meâŚâ  âWell, I donât know about elves but will we do?âSally asked as she and Curtis entered.  âSal!âShannon explained, flinging her arms around her foster sister and then giving Curtis the same treatment a moment later,âWhat are you guys doing here?â  âSelina and Mandy gave us a call,âCurtis explained,âThey thought you could use a helping hand.â  âBoy, could I ever!â  âDid they give Damian a call too?âShane asked.  âNo,âSally admitted,âBut we have gotâŚsomeone else.â  A young man around the same age as them came in after Sally and Curtis, looking about him.âWow, the old place hasnât changed a bit.â  âJack.âShannon sounded slightly underwhelmed.âYou decided to come and help?â  âI know that might seem like a strange concept but Iâve had a bit of military discipline since I lived here. I actually know how to keep my room clean now.â  Sam, Liam and Tiegan came down.âWow, did I just go back in time three years?âSam wondered.  âInto the car, you three,âCurtis told them,âIâll give you a lift to school.â  Sally helped Shannon finish off the lunches.âTake these as well,âshe added.  Shannon smiled at her.âIt is really good to have you back.â *** Selina and Mandy were walking in the caravan park.âSo, the cavalry all turned up okay then?âSelina asked.  âExactly as planned,âMandy confirmed,âThey seem to have taken a load off Shannonâs mind.âShe noticed Jack sitting on his own outside the house.âWellâŚmost of them, anyway.â  âI think I need to go on a rescue mission again,âSelina noted,âSee you later.âShe headed over to Jack. âYou not with the others?â  Jack sighed.âI get the feelings theyâre not as overjoyed to see me as they are Curtis and Sal.â  âWell, to be fair, most of the time you lived here, you were more likely to be causing trouble than cleaning it up.â  âThat is fair,âJack conceded,âBut you know, since I left this place, Iâve done my best to put all that behind me.And Shane still sees me as that Year 10 that poured custard over him one time.â  Selina sat down next to him.âI got to admit, youâre probably more sorted than I am these days.â  âWow, that really is an admission, coming from the old school captain.I thought you were pretty fixed up?I mean, youâve got that whole nursing thing going onâŚâ  âYeah but it kind of feels like Iâm going through the motions there.I do want to be a nurse but thereâs not much else going on in my life.â  âWell, you could always do what I did.â  It took a moment for Selina to realise what he meant.âWhat, join the navy?â  âYeah, why not? They have nurses in the navy. You could finish your training there and youâd have a purpose afterwards.â  Selina looked at him as though seeing him for the first time.âJack, I canât believe Iâm saying this, but I think you really have started talking a lot of sense.â
