Jess Posted July 10, 2006 Report Posted July 10, 2006 Hey Katya. I'm on some self-organised work experience at a legal firm for the week, so I went on a case there with one of the partners. My parents think I need something more constructive to do with my time, so they organised this for me. It was actually really interesting, and the Courts are housed in a really beautiful building. They banned photos though, apparently it's classed as "contempt of court" or something.... Quote

katya Posted July 10, 2006 Report Posted July 10, 2006 Yea, I was wondering where you were today. Can you say what the case is about? Quote
Jess Posted July 10, 2006 Report Posted July 10, 2006 Yeah, I'm sorry I didn't mention it last night. My Mum appeared and told me that I had to go to bed, and I didn't have time to tell everyone that I wouldn't be around today...sorry! I'm on work experience for the rest of the week, but I'll be around in the evenings. Quote
Jess Posted July 10, 2006 Report Posted July 10, 2006 Yea, I was wondering where you were today. Can you say what the case is about? Yeah, I can't mention names (not that you'd know the companies involved anyway ), but it's pretty safe to talk about it in general terms. Basically, it was a commercial case and the original dispute was about some hire costs (ie a company had hired some equipment) that weren't paid. The solicitors that I was with won the original case, but then they came back to the courts today because there was a dispute over who should pay the costs for the case. It's all very complicated and I can't be bothered to explain (and it would send you all to sleep ), but basically one side was saying that the original hire contract had been broken so they shouldn't have to pay the costs of taking the case to court and the other side were counter-claiming. Anyway, to cut a long story short, the judge deferred judgement until Thursday. IMO, it seemed like a bit of a pointless case. It went to the Royal Courts of Justice (a really top court) when in reality it was a £50,000 claim that was a drop in the ocean for both the multimillion pound companies. It was just people squabbling over money. The case itself wasn't the most riveting, but it was really interesting seeing how the legal process works. I think I've got some more more *interesting* cases coming up later in the week, though. Quote
