Irene's drinking

How many times has Irene relapsed over the years? I seem to remember her almost drinking around 95-97 at some point but I don't remember any other times.

In 2009, Irene was found frightened and terrified, in a drunken state in Episode 4850- on the boat by Angelo.

And she went back to drinking in Episode 4858 in jail after she was wrongly accused of Lou De Bono's murder.

And she decided to stop drinking in Episode 4874 when she made a decision to get help to deal with it.

Irene fell off the wagon again last year in Episode 6341 since her secret about the sexual abuse she went through when she was younger was revealed.

Spoiler

And now Irene had stopped drinking and gone back to normal since the return of Home and Away this year in February 2016.

(Thought I should add the spoiler tag because i noticed you will be having the 2015 season finale this week on UK screens) :)

I found this very unrealistic. This most recent relapse seems to have been completely forgotten, and Irene has returned to her normal self. It felt as though the writers have moved on and now want to concentrate on the search for her secret child, and are glossing over the buildup to this story. Irene relapsed; realistically she would still have trouble with alcohol at this point and would need professionally help IMO.

Yep she was all  a drunken mess and strugging coming to terms with her past and having a daugter somewhere out there in the finale but seen then she's found some sort of app to help her track her daugter and she no longer drinks or seems scared of her flashbacks now Another reason that I find this abuse story hard to believe

Same happened with her 2009 relapse to be fair. One scene at an AA meeting, and the grog was never mentioned again. Very shabby.

There were a couple of almost-relapses in the mid 90s. One in 1995 when Marilyn stupidly left a bottle of wine lying around. Another in 1997 when the baby she had for Finlay was kidnapped.

That's interesting, so she didn't have a proper relapse in the 90s then?

Correct, 2009 was the first time Lynne had actually played Irene drunk!

That's amazing! I think they should go the whole hog some time and make Irene have a relapse for a couple of months, just like Phil in EastEnders. I like the way she got violent in her recent relapse which is what Damian and Fin always said she was like. Glad to finally see it after all these years and see how drink truly can change someone.

I wish Lynne had played part since 1991 as would to see Lynne playing evil Irene!.

Phil's relapse has (in my limited experience) felt like a far more realistic and genuine portrayal of a relapse into addiction. He started off slowly, clearly ashamed of what was happening to him, and slowly over many weeks became worse and more aggressive. They have also made the effort to show not only the mental deterioration, but also the physical decline in Phil's health. So extra credit to their makeup team.

For Irene, there was about two weeks between her first drink and a raging alcoholic who realised she needed help. Then within a week she was her bright and cheerful self again, looking for her daughter without apparently giving any further thought to her life-threatening addiction! Very poorly handled this time, I expected far better.
