solaris Posted November 27, 2008 Report Posted November 27, 2008 Hi guys sorry took awile to get back. good to know some people have done it. The biggest problem im finding up and till now was watching other people fingerspell, i kept getting the E and I wrong i think i was cocertrating to hard on the hand and not relaxing.. basically, i felt a couple of weeks ago i really thought oh im not going to be able to do this, im just not getting it..im not daft it takes me awile to get things i surposse. When i got the dvd for BSL level 1 , it helped a lot, i feel more confident than i did. The ASL is amercan sign is it?. the thing is there are different ways its a lot to learn. Zetti.. if you really dont mind i think i could do with some help.. either here or i'll pm you? and that also goes for Champange char.. thanks you can pm me if you feel comfortable that way or here, I am happy to help learning fingerspell for me was natural but for someone who doesnt have any background knowledge of it might feel differently i am here to help Aint that the truth! I started learning BSL when I met my (now) best friend - she was born totally deaf - there was much laughter, much frustration and some tears along the way but it was well worth it. Only one of her friends from the school she used to go to (specialist on for people with hearing problems) will communicate with me though - the others seem to think that because I can hear (too well sometimes) I shouldn't be signing! Anyone have an explanation for this? Or are they the proverbial rotten apples?
Zetti Posted November 27, 2008 Report Posted November 27, 2008 I have a friend who is deaf but had speech therapy so she can talk as well. She cant always understand people and when she can people assume she doesnt need any extra help when she does. just ignore them they have nothing better to do with their lives.

Yeah, I do - It just bugs me that I can't do right for doing wrong What used to happen was:- If I spoke and they can't lip-read....they'd go on about people not understanding what it's like to be deaf (No, I don't understand - how can I? I'm not deaf!) If I signed...I was taking the p**s out of them being deaf! (how the flip is being able to 'speak' their language taking the p**s? To me it's no different to learning French/Italian/any of the other languages I speak) <Goes and screams in a corner> Sorry, I don't think I'll ever understand people and I needed to vent - it's not aimed at you Zetti, just one particular group of bad mannered people! My best mate is cool though, so more than worth the occasional run-in with her other friends :D
