I think it's possible that we could go round and round in circles whether or not the BBC decided to axe the show or not due to the circumstance that are involved.

Never believe a word that Channel Seven "news" reports. They are the trashiest media whores on Australian network television, and everything they say and do is said and done for the express purpose of creating "drama." They don't let facts get in the way of sensationalism.

EDIT: And obviously, Neighbours is the rival of Seven's most popular show. Of course they're going to want to trash it.

Plus Seven axed the show themselves only for it to be picked up by Ten and become a global phenomenon.

BBC set to axe top Aussie soap

LONDON: The BBC will drop the Australian soap opera Neighbours from its schedules next year after backing down in a bidding war.

Neighbours is a staple of BBC One's daytime schedule, bringing in an average audience of 5.6 million people a day, and has been on the network since 1986.

However, Neighbours' distributor Fremantle Media has been upping the price in negotiations, and rival free-to-air broadcaster Channel Five acquired the show for $720 million yesterday over an eight-year-period.

"We were asked to pay a price that the BBC couldn't pay," BBC One controller Peter Finchman said today.

"It's a sad day and one we didn't want."
